Empowering Our Community Through Literacy

About the Program

For more than 20 years, the Canal Spanish Literacy Program has dedicated itself to empowering non-reading Spanish-speaking residents of San Rafael by breaking down barriers of language and low literacy. Our mission is to help individuals fully participate in their community through education, leadership development, and advocacy training.

We strive to break down barriers and create opportunities for personal and community growth for our students, who are among the most under-served population in the county. The program provides participants with a pathway to join standard English as a Second Language programs, prepare for citizenship classes, enhance their ability to help their children in school, and obtain better jobs.

We believe literacy is the first step towards independence, community contribution, and breaking the cycle of educational disadvantage.

Community & Support

Beyond literacy, we foster leadership and advocacy. Our program provides life-skills training and community exposure, enabling participants to confidently access services and advocate for themselves and their families.

“For me it was as if someone turned on the light in my life giving me an independent feeling. I feel tremendous joy to be able to pass my driving test and to write about my feelings and emotions.”
